Case Description
This is a second entry I am posting regarding my TMJ problem. I'm a 28 year old female who had braces at 17yrs old with 4 premolar extraction. Since then I always suffered from retruded upper/lower jaw and was never able to close my mouth properly. Now I have about 4 mm overbite. I had a consultation with an orthodontist today, and was told that my tmj is almost resorbed due to the jaw retrusion- it's too compressed. I am not a candidate for orthognatic surgery and I do not wish to have any surgeries. So I guess my only option is orthodontic treatment. The orthodontist showed me some appliance that looked similar to Twin Block appliance. He told me that it takes about 3-4 yrs to fix my bite. He also recommended getting dental implants later on. It'll be nice if everything he suggested is possible. But I need a second opinion. I'd be glad to visit any dentist who has a better suggestion and experience in my case.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Dear Patient...Yes it sounds like a compicated bite due to past orthodontic treatment combined with genetics..Class II occlusion is where the lower jaw never grows all the way out to keep up with the uppper jaw. Sometimes mandibular surgery is the only answer cuz it might be the fastest. With traditional braces it could take a few years to correct. My best advice is to get another opinion (in office) from another Orhodontist and see what they say. You can really get a complete second opinion on the i-net due to the fact we need to see xrays,,bite, facial profiles etc...Good luck..

My experience in orthodontic treatment is very limited. I would ask you to speak with the orthodontist I normally refer to for a second opinion. His name is Jeff Liu, and his phone number is (818) 886-1414. You may preview his office at the website www.northridgebraces.com. If you decide to schedule a consult, please bring all pertinent records and radiographs you have. Best of luck!
