Case Description
I'm 28 year old female who's diagnosed with TMJ arthritis and I have a sign of moderate resorption. I had braces @ 16 yrs old and took out 4 premolars. Since then I had a severe overbite and it seems to cause TMJ problems. I also have a history of TMJ pain @ 11 yrs old, and naturally have a small chin. Can braces correct the overbite? or would this cuase more problems on my TMJ?

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

sure it can help but it may not. you need to see a good orthodontist for starters.

First of all, I am not a speicalist. However, in my 39 years of practice, I have seen a lot of maladies corrected by orthodontics and sometimes orthodontics and surgery to jaw. There is no treatment, in my opinion, that can guarantee that your tmj problems of pain will improve with orthodontics.I would try some type of bite appliances, with a dentist that is experienced in this, and see if wearing the appliances improves your position of the jaw and relieves you of symptoms - before going through orthodontics. It is possible that using the right kind of appliance will aleviate symptoms and you will not need orthodontics - at least for the problem of tmj pain. If you want a referral on the West Side, call my office for a name. If you want to bring your interesting case to my office in Woodland Hills, let me know. If you want to speak on the phone to me first, let my front desk ladies know - or email me.Regards and good luck. Phil Sacks DDS

Unfortunately, it is difficult to diagnose the problem based on the information you gave. Orthodontic treatment is one of the main modalities used to correct dental/skeletal "overbites". Comprehensive orthodontic records would be required to properly diagnose and treatment plan your case. As for the "TMJ" arthritis, again, diagositic records (tomograms) would be required to determine the extent of the problem. As for moderate resporption, is that related to the temperomandibular joint regions or the roots of the teeth? A lot of information would be required for any orthodontic specialist to properly diagnose and treatment plan your case.

Since you are having TMJ arthritis at 28 years old, I would want to be in the hands of a really good prosthodontist to steer you in the right direction. Your case might be treated by extruding your teeth orthodontically, you might require bite opening with crowns on your back teeth, or you might need a combination of the two. The specialist that I would go to if it were my mouth is Frank Vidjak, DDS in Beverly Hills. His number is: (310) 738-7249Hope this helps,-Tom Stelmach, DDSAlso: Feel free to e-mail me with any questions along the wayyhavdk@yahoo.com

Dear Patient,I too have had the same problem since the removal of my braces. In my case the premolars were extracted as well and it seems to have created more problems with my bite and TMJ. The best way to correct this disharmony is through braces. I recommend Damon''''''''s since they are small, move teeth fast and produce the best results. The braces done correctly will not create more TMJ problems ,if anything they will relieve the tension you must feel in your jaw now.Let us know if there is anything we can do to help you or perhaps referr you to a great orthodontist!Kind regards,Daniela Pavlin DDS
